Sweet potatoes from Egypt are available again! Together with our colleague in Egypt, our growers have started harvesting and transporting sweet potatoes to Kraaijeveld again. In this article, read all about the source, the process and the sweet potatoes for customers.
The source of sweet potatoes
Our sweet potatoes come from Egypt. Our colleague Ahmed lives and works here to keep close contact with our growers. Currently, we have two growers. Ahmed visits these growers every week to see what is available. Not only does the produce have to be of high quality, but also the packaging has to be good.
Right now, the season is just starting. Especially the smaller sizes are available. The larger sizes will follow later in the season, as will the big boxes. The season runs until January. Depending on the situation, weather and quality, the season may continue for another two months or so.
Process of Egyptian sweet potatoes
Our sweet potatoes are washed and dried after harvesting. As there is an increased risk of mould, the products are not boxed immediately. This only happens when the products are really dry. Ahmed therefore maintains close contact with the growers to minimise the risk of these moulds. After packing, the sweet potatoes are transported to the Netherlands by boat.
Sweet potatoes for our customers
The gastronomic and retail clients mainly use the 6-kilo packaging. Very occasionally they also use the larger sizes with the larger packaging, i.e. 18KG. Processing customers mainly use the 18KG boxes. For these customers, there are even sweet potatoes in bins, available on request.
