The source of Brussel sprouts
Farmer Boon is a family business in Zeewolde. Here, Jacob and his brother are working daily to keep up the produce and the farm. The produce they grow is mainly for the processing industry. This farmer works with circular farming. That means the leftovers from the processed crop are given to their cows. Farmer Boon is the only grower in the Netherlands that uses this recycling process and, in addition, they also work energy neutrally, thanks to solar panels.
The land-based process
The first sprouts were harvested at the end of August. Before that, the sprouts are topped; this gives them more room to grow. The grower grows several sizes of sprouts; he grows category A and category B sprouts. The category B sprouts are smaller and are good for export. The quality of the sprouts is also very good. The Netherlands experienced a lot of rainfall at the beginning of the season, which caused difficulties, but the sprouts are growing very well despite the rain.
Brussels sprouts are becoming increasingly popular, this is thanks to breeding. In fact, this has made them taste a lot sweeter and you can use them in different ways in the kitchen.
The warehouse process
Farmer Jacob works with its own packing machine. This allows us to pre-order sprouts in different sizes. The packaging can also be ordered. For example, the sprouts are available in bales, but also in smaller packaging. Even a label and barcode are available for Retail customers.
In addition, farmer Jacob also has a cleaning machine. This machine ensures that cleaned sprouts can be packed in flowpacks. Farmer Jacob also has various certificates, such as IFS, PlanetProof.

Meanwhile, the first bales of sprouts have already arrived at Kraaijeveld and been sold to our customers. Every week we receive a new load of sprouts.
