Our grapes supplier tells more...Alwyn from Dippenaar
The month of December is all about grapes. The grapes from Namibia and RSA did arrive in week 48. The volumes will become more as the season will progress. We expect RSA/NA grapes from our supplier Dippenaar in week 51. In this article our supplier tells more! Alwyn from Dippenaar tells you more about the company, about the product and the export of grapes.
About the company
We are Dippenaar, a company that supplies grapes from South Africa. Paul and Neeltjie Dippenaar used to be schoolteachers before deciding to change careers and become farmers. We started with one farm and slowly acquired more grape farms. The first table grapes were produced for the local and export markets in 1982 after which we planted our first few hectares of Thomson Seedless. I joined the farm in 1996 followed by my two brothers! Today we own and manage eight production units and employ more than 350 people. We provide our employees with housing, healthcare, education for the children and recreation.
About the product
The hot, arid climate, fertile soil and the abundant fresh water of the Orange River make it possible for us to produce crisp, sweet grapes during the South African production season. It is our vision to produce the finest quality grapes with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. This is the only way we can ensure high quality grapes for future generations. We implement the principles of Good Agricultural Practices on all our farms. We aim to produce safe and healthy fruit while considering the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the farms.
Table grapes go through a number of growth stages. First the vines are pruned and this is followed by the first buds in early spring. These buds turn into small bunches of grapes. The vines flower in late spring and develop grape berries which turn into grapes which grow until
they are wrapped around the vines. The sugar levels increase and the colour of the grapes change from an immature green to the colour of ripe grapes. The sugar levels of the grapes are checked each morning to ensure an optimum harvest. The last phase is the harvest and packing of the grapes.
About the export
We export our grapes to more than 30 countries in America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia. We harvest our grapes after which we supply our products from week 51 until week 4. We supply our grapes in an assortment of packaging, including paper packaging.
We have the following certificates: GlobalGAP, Tesco Nurture, SIZA.
