Everyone knows that watermelons are very popular. And especially during summer months! Did you know that more than 90 billion kilos of watermelons are sold every year? This is about 36 billion watermelons! Many of these are also eaten in Europe. But did you know that it wasn't until after World War II that melons came to our continent? In this blog, Kraaijeveld tells you more about: what to do with a watermelon, the benefits of eating a watermelon, a preview of the new overseas season and a recipe to enjoy.

Why is it that watermelons are very popular?

Why is it that watermelons cannot be sold in winter and are in short due to the high demand in summer? Watermelons have by far the best taste in summer. They consist of no less than 91 percent of water! Watermelons also contain a relatively high amount of lycopene. This oxidant gives the melon its beautiful red color and protects your skin against damage caused by UV radiation. So doubly handy: a sunscreen from the inside and also super hydrating! Finally, watermelons hardly contain any calories. Ideal as a snack during the warm day.

The new watermelon season at Kraaijeveld

Currently, our Kraaijeveld melons come from Spain, where the perfect climate for the ripening
of a melon prevails during the summer. The first watermelons from our supplier Famosa from Brazil arrive at the end of August. Availability will not be high at the beginning of the season, because the growth of the melons has lagged behind due to the weather of recent weeks. Nevertheless, we expect a new season with good quality products and sufficient volumes available! View the photo that supplier Famosa sent on the right. Not only will the watermelon season change soon, the seasons of products at Kraaijeveld alternate throughout the year.

Stay cool with this receipt

Are you looking to cool off? Take one watermelon, lime juice from one lime, a blender, and a straw! Cut the watermelon in half, scoop out the flesh, put it in a blender and blend until smooth. Strain the seeds from the watermelon juice and then pour the juice back into the melon, along with the squeezed lime juice. Put your straw in it and enjoy! It doesn't get any easier, does it?
